Wallace Stegner, 'The Big Rock Candy Mountain,' published by Penguin Books. First published in the United States of America in 1943 by Doubleday & Company, Inc., this copy was published in Penguin Books in 1991.
The Big Rock Candy Mountain is a 563 page softcover measuring 7 3/4" x 5". There are a couple creases and rubbing to the front and back cover. There is a 1" closed tear along the bottom right edge of the cover spine that doesn't harm the integrity of the pages attached to the binding. Inside, the pages are clean and unmarked. The last page has a crease. The condition is good.
Bo Mason, his wife, Elsa, and their two boys live a transient life of poverty and despair. Drifting from town to town and from state to state, the violent, ruthless Bo seeks out his fortune--in the hotel business, in new farmland, and eventually, in illegal rum-running through the treacherous back roads of the American Northwest.
Stegner portrays more than thirty years in the life of the Mason family in this masterful, harrowing saga of people trying to survive during the lean years of the early twentieth century.
