The history of the development of dress throughout the ages is one of very absorbing interest to the student of costume in any of its phases, and is the subject of Part I of this book. Many happy hours can be spent in the reading and study of this subject which has such close associations with history, literature, art, and ethnology. In the average school or college courses, however, time does not permit of very intensive study in this far-reaching field. With this condition in mind, an attempt has been made to gather together for the student of costume, merely the highlights of that fascinating story which has been created and bequeathed to future generations by peoples of diverse ages and countries in their attempts to satisfy their innate love of adornment, attempts that have been modified in the case of different peoples by the different social, political, religious, economic, and geographic conditions which surround them.
